In 2023 I’m going to try reading the Bible following The {Catholic} Bible in 360 Challenge (the actual plan and check sheet is here). I like this plan because

it divides the Bible into three sections, Old Testament (Pentateuch, History, Prophets), Wisdom¹, and New Testament, with a reading from each section each day, similar to the pattern of Bible readings in the Mass,
all of the books are read through completely in order,
the readings begin with Genesis, Job, and Matthew, respectively the first book of the Old Testament, the oldest of the Wisdom books, and the first book of the New Testament,
the plan is divided by numbered days instead of dates so the plan can be started any time.

I’ll be reading the Project Gutenberg edition of the Douay-Rheims Bible on my Kindle.

I finished the Bible today with the Prophesy of Malachias, 403 days after I started and 43 days later than the Bible 360 goal.

I didn’t study any part of the Bible very deeply, but it was very valuable to gain a passing knowledge of all parts of the Bible and to read the historic and prophetic books in their complete context. Reading the prophets I learned that the great disasters that befell the Israelites, the Babylonian exile, the destruction of the First Temple, and the rest, were fortold by God as just punishment for their generations of unfaithfulness to Him. Over all of their history there were only a few individuals and a few short periods of time when the Israelites even tried to love God with their whole heart, their whole soul, and their whole strength. It made me think how great a chastisement we today deserve from God. May the Lord have mercy on us.

The chronological connections between the books and the geography of the Holy Land were also very interesting and I hope to study both in more depth sometime. It was fascinating to imagine the past glories of cities like Jerusalem or Samaria that have faded or disappeared over time.

It would be a blessing to any Christian to have a greater familiarity with the Bible. I pray that I can share the gifts I have gained in this experience and encourage others to greater love of the Lord.

I got tired of updating this chart, but I have kept with the project. Today is the 285th day of 2023 and I completed day 260 of the reading plan, starting into the prophetic books with Isaiah 1 and finishing the New Testament with Revelation 22.
