"Living in Japan" 「日本で暮らす」

I. The Beginning
I. 始まり

   A. I started living in Japan in 1991, 27 years ago. That is now half of my life so far.
   A. ２７年前１９９１年から日本で暮らしてきました。今までの人生の半分です。
   B. I arrived with my Japanese wife and my then not-yet-one-year-old oldest son.
   B. 家内とまだ一歳になっていなかった長男と一緒に来ました。
   C. Before that, my wife and I met, married, and lived for three years in the US, and I wanted to learn the culture and language of her home, Japan.
   C. その前、私と家内はアメリカで出会って、結婚して、３年間暮らしてから、彼女の生まれ故郷の日本の文化と言語を知りたくなって来ました。
   D. I did not set a time limit on my stay because I wanted to invest myself in learning how to live in Japan and not 
      hold back thinking I could escape back to the US.
   D. 日本に来たとき、アメリカへ帰る予定を立てませんでした。なぜかというと日本の暮らしで問題にぶつかるとき、「帰るからどうでもいい」と言わず、
      自分を真面目に対応させたかったからです。
      
II. Difference between life in Japan and the US
II. 日本とアメリカの生活の相違点

   A. Differences stand out at first.
   A. 最初相違点が目立ちます。
   B. My first morning at my in-laws house, I took photos of the neighbors blue tile roof.
   B. 始めて家内の両親の家で泊まったとき、二階の窓から見かけた隣の家の青いタイルの屋根にとても驚いて沢山の写真をとりました。
   C. Japan has many different customs.
   C. アメリカと違う多くの習慣
      1. Removing shoes indoors
      1. 家の玄関で靴を脱ぐこと。
      2. Public baths and hot springs
      2. 銭湯と温泉
      3. Foods and chopsticks
      3. 和食とお箸      
   D. Towns in Japan are a jumble of different areas: residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural. American towns are 
      more spread out with different kinds of property separated in different areas.
   D. 日本の町では建物の種類（住宅、オフィス、工場、農場）がごちゃごちゃ混ざっている。アメリカの町は広くて建物の種類が地区ごとに分かれている。
      
III. Similarities between life in Japan and the US
III. 日本とアメリカの生活の共通点

   A. Similarities emerge after one is used to the differences, but are more important than the differences.
   A. 生活の相違点に少しなれたら、共通点が見えて来ました。しかし、共通点は相違点より重要です。
   B. The importance of family, friends, and neighbors.
   B. 家族、友人、隣人の大切さ。
   C. Working to provide a comfortable and secure lifestyle for one's family.
   C. 家族ができるだけ裕福かつ安全な生活を送るための労働。
   D. Worry about one's children's future in the form of education and peaceful society.
   D. 子供の将来（教育、社会）のための心配。
   
IV. Difficulties in living in Japan
IV. 日本暮らしの難点

   A. I did not like the flavor of mugicha, although I like it now.
   A. 麦茶の味は苦手でした。（今は好きです。）
   B. Expressing myself in Japanese
   B. 日本語での自己表現
      1. I understood and spoke very little Japanese when I arrived.
      1. 日本に引っ越してきたとき、日本語をほぼ喋れなかったです。
      2. In a group, it was frustrating to concentrate to understand what someone had said and think of how to say my response,
         only to find that the conversation topic has changed before I could speak.
      2. 日本語を学んでいた間、会議やグループ会話に参加したとき、一生懸命話題を理解しようとして、自分が言いたいことにに気づいて、
         汗をかきながら日本語の単語と文法を思い出して、やっと発言する準備が整えた時点で皆の話が全然違う課題に流れちゃったことはとても
         辛かったです。
      3. Although my Japanese has improved, there are still many areas where it is difficult to communicate freely.
      3. 今は日本語がある程度出きるようになりましたが、自分の意見や感想をうまく伝われないことがまだまだ沢山あります。

V. Helps in living in Japan
V. 日本暮らしの援助

   A. Wife - It was always a great relief of stress after a day of work to go home and speak English with my wife.
   A. 家内：不慣れな日本語での仕事で毎日たまったストレスを発散するには、家に帰って家内と一緒に英語でおしゃべりすることに癒されました。
   B. Family - Children and in-laws made me feel like I belonged even when fitting-in at work or elsewhere was difficult.
   B. 家族：自分がどう貢献でれかと悩んだとき、子供たちや義理の父母に受け入れられて居場所があると知ってほっとしました。
   C. Church - Being part of a community that shares faith and values helped live in a society that does not share the same
      faith or values.
   C. 教会：自分が育てられた国と違う歴史や価値観を持つ日本の社会に違和感を感じたとき、同じ信仰と価値観を共有する共同体のメンバーである
      ことは大きな恵みでした。
      
VI. Conclusion
VI. 最後に

   A. Learning Japanese culture, language, and lifestyle has been the greatest education of my life.
   A. 日本の文化、言語、生活をありのまま経験して学ぶことは一生の最高の教育でした。
   B. I thank God for the state of peace between between Japan and the US that has made this life possible.
   B. 自分の両親が子供のころ、日本とアメリカが敵国で私の今の生活が全然ありえない時代だったのに、神様の賜物である平和が訪れたことによって
      可能になった私の人生に感謝の気持ちいっぱいです。

. The differences between Japanese and American culture leapt out at first

  * Small houses with blue tile roofs
  * Mixed land use: residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural all in same area
  * Removing shoes indoors, bath and onsen, food
  * Company-centered life of salary-men
  * Political apathy
  * Christian minority, lack of Christian cultural influence
  
. However, I was more surprised by similarities and common values held by Japanese and Americans in spite of the cultural, 
  religious, and historic differences.
  
  * The importance of family, ancestors, friends, neighbors
  * Work to materially support one's family
  * Concern for children's future, both personal and societal
  * Enjoyment of fellowship with family, neighbors, friends

. Personal difficulties learning to live in Japan

  * Flavor of mugicha (like it now)
  * Self-expression through language
  
. Secret for survival

  * Wife and family
  * Church community
